Course Description

The purpose of this course is to serve as an introduction to contact tracing for nurses. Foundational topics include the background of epidemics, contact tracing purpose, protocols, and ethical principles. Tools and resources used to aid the contact tracer in their investigation will also be reviewed. The course is designed in alignment with peer-reviewed articles, evidence-based Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, and state health departments’ recommendations.

Learning Outcomes

During this course you will:

  • Review the history of epidemics, the purpose and process of contact tracing, and how contact tracing can positively impact the community.
  • Determine how the presentation, transmission, infectious periods of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic are used by the contact tracer.
  • Identify contact tracing processes, effective communication methods, technological resources, and mitigating strategies used during an investigation.
  • Recognize and apply ethical principles when collecting, communicating, and disseminating Personal Identifiable Information.
